Core Skills Analysis

Activity

01/03/2025- We are excepting a winter weather front bringing an ice/snow storm and below freezing temps for greater than a week. On the farm the means things have to be prepped and prepared. Izzie help me bottle feed the calf, then we fed and watered the pigs, fed and watered the cows, fed and watered the chickens both coops. Collected eggs. We then had to walk the water hoses out to keep them from freezing, we then pulled them into the shop bathroom that has a heat lamp to keep the pipes from freezing. We had to run extension cords to all the water troughs in put in heaters to keep them from freezing up. Our camper needed the final touches of winterzing so Izzie help poor the antifreeze into the black and grey water tanks. We had to hook up the generator and ensure it was working properly, then we had to go to the gas station to fill our gas cans to supply fuel to the generator if needed. We discussed why we take all these precautions during winter weather and how to ensure we are prepared to keep us and our animals safe. 2.0

Core Skills Analysis

English

  • Izzie practiced her vocabulary by learning new terms related to farming and winter preparations, such as 'winterizing,' 'antifreeze,' and 'generator.'
  • The activity included verbal discussions about the importance of each task, helping her develop her speaking and listening skills.
  • By collecting eggs and participating in bottle feeding, Izzie learned to follow directions and instructions, enhancing her comprehension abilities.
  • Izzie described the steps involved in the day’s tasks, reinforcing her narrative skills through storytelling.

History

  • The experience helped Izzie connect with historical practices in farming and animal husbandry that have been essential for survival through harsh winters.
  • Through discussion of winter preparations, Izzie learned how past generations had to adapt their farming techniques to ensure their animals' safety.
  • By understanding the importance of preparation, Izzie gained insights into how people historically emerged resilient in the face of adverse weather conditions.
  • Izzie acquired knowledge about traditional farming practices that have been passed down and remain relevant in today’s agricultural methods.

Math

  • Izzie practiced measuring and estimating when pouring antifreeze into the tanks, helping her grasp basic measurement concepts.
  • While filling the generator with fuel, she learned about quantities, as she had to figure out how much gas would be needed.
  • The process of counting eggs collected provided practical experience in numeracy and basic arithmetic.
  • Izzie was involved in organizing the tasks, allowing her to engage in simple problem-solving and planning.

Physical Education

  • The physical activity involved in walking the water hoses and feeding the animals contributed to her gross motor skills and overall physical fitness.
  • Izzie practiced coordination and balance while maneuvering around the farm and managing various tasks.
  • Working in such a physically demanding setting helps develop her stamina and perseverance.
  • The outdoor experience encourages an appreciation for active play and exploration in natural settings.

Science

  • Izzie learned about the impact of temperature on water and the need for heaters to prevent freezing, introducing basic scientific concepts of states of matter.
  • Through hands-on activities, she explored animal care and the biological needs of farm animals during extreme weather conditions.
  • The mention of using heat lamps and generators exposed her to the principles of thermodynamics and energy conservation.
  • By winterizing equipment, Izzie gained insights into maintenance and engineering concepts that can prevent damage in extreme weather.

Social Studies

  • Izzie developed an understanding of the importance of community and family roles in ensuring safety during adverse weather conditions.
  • Discussing the precautions taken during the winter weather reinforced concepts of responsibility and caring for living creatures.
  • By participating in the day's tasks, she learned about cooperation and teamwork in completing essential chores on the farm.
  • This activity allowed her to understand connectedness between people, animals, and nature, fostering a sense of community awareness.

Tips

For further exploration, it would be beneficial for Izzie to engage in more hands-on activities related to weather preparedness and animal care. Parents or teachers could organize visits to local farms or set up simulations at home to demonstrate how weather impacts farms. Incorporating simple experiments, such as observing how ice melts at different temperatures, could deepen her understanding of these concepts. Storytime with books related to winter weather or animal care can also enhance her comprehension and spark discussions about what she learns.
