I read Elling an article titled "People You Should Know" about Clara Brown, who was also known as the "Angel of the Rockies." We learned that Clara was born into slavery in the early 1800s and was eventually sold and separated from her husband and children. She later gained her freedom and headed west, becoming one of the first Black women to settle in Colorado during the gold rush. Clara became a successful businesswoman who used her wealth to help other people, and she was eventually joyfully reunited with one of her lost daughters. Elling loved hearing Clara's story and was cheering her on for going from being a slave to a successful business woman who was doing good for her community. He was so happy that she found her daughter. He also helped calculate how old Clara was when she died.
