Core Skills Analysis

English (Writing)

Misty wrote the words “yay”, “to matilda” and “misty” on the inside of the card and surrounded them with lots of tiny hearts. By doing this she practiced forming capital letters, spacing between words, and choosing language that expressed happiness and affection. The activity helped her understand how a short written message can convey a personal feeling, and she began to see the link between spelling, punctuation and meaning.

Art and Design

Misty drew a simple heart and a stick‑person on the front of the card and then added many decorative hearts around the border. She used basic shapes, lines and colour to create a recognizable symbol of love and a friendly figure. Through this she developed fine‑motor control, learned how to plan a composition, and discovered how visual symbols can represent emotions.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Misty gave the completed card to her baby friend Matilda, showing kindness and the desire to celebrate another person. This act demonstrated empathy, an awareness of another’s feelings, and the social skill of giving a personal gift. She experienced the positive response that comes from thoughtful communication, reinforcing concepts of friendship and caring.

Tips

1. Set up a classroom or home “card exchange” where children create cards for different occasions (birthday, thank‑you, encouragement) to practice both writing and artistic expression. 2. Introduce a short lesson on symbols of love and friendship from different cultures, then have Misty design a new symbol to add to her card repertoire. 3. Expand the writing component by asking her to write a one‑sentence story about the stick‑person’s adventure, encouraging narrative skills. 4. Role‑play giving and receiving cards with peers to deepen social‑emotional understanding and polite conversation.
