Core Skills Analysis
Physical Education
Ivy practiced an important physical education skill by paddling out past the break while staying balanced on her board. She learned how to use her body strength, coordination, and timing to move through moving water without losing control of the board. By working on directing her board, Ivy also improved her motor planning and learned how small shifts in body position could change her direction. This activity showed growing confidence, persistence, and body awareness in a challenging outdoor setting.
Science
Ivy experienced several science concepts while surfing at The Point, especially the way waves, water movement, and board control interact. She learned that the break of a wave creates changing conditions that affect how far and how safely she could paddle out. By adjusting her board direction, she observed how force, motion, and balance worked together in real time. This hands-on experience helped her build early understanding of ocean behavior and how people respond to natural forces.
Tips
To extend Ivy’s learning, she could compare different ocean conditions and talk about how wave size, current, and board position changed her experience at The Point. A simple surf journal would help her record what she noticed each time she paddled out, which builds observation skills and reflection. She could also sketch the path she took through the water and label where she had to turn or adjust her balance, connecting movement to spatial reasoning. For a creative extension, Ivy might watch a short video about waves or surf safety and then discuss how her own choices on the board matched what she learned.
Book Recommendations

- The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks by Joanna Cole: A lively introduction to how water moves and changes, connecting well with ocean and wave learning.
- National Geographic Kids Everything Sharks by DK: An engaging nonfiction book that can connect ocean activities with marine life and sea environments.
Learning Standards
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2 - Ivy could write informative reflections about what happened while surfing and explain the steps she used to stay balanced and direct her board.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1 - She could discuss her surfing experience with friends, sharing observations and responding to others' ideas about wave conditions and board control.
- CCSS.MATH.MP.1 - Ivy made sense of a real-world challenge by persisting through the surf and adjusting her actions when conditions changed.
- CCSS.MATH.MP.4 - She used spatial reasoning when directing her board and deciding how to move through the water.
- NGSS 3-PS2-1 - Ivy observed how forces from water affected motion, balance, and the movement of her board.
Try This Next
- Draw a labeled diagram showing Ivy paddling out past the break and turning her board.
- Write 3 questions about what helped Ivy stay on her board and what made the water challenging.
- Make a simple cause-and-effect chart: 'If the wave changes, then Ivy must...'
