Alfie has lots of opportunities for physical activity, both in the house & outside. He uses an indoor trampoline for daily rebounding exercise, along with gymnastics bars, wobble boards, yoga & peanut balls, plus hedgehog pods & stepping stones with connecting balance beams. These are all pieces of equipment he interacts with several times a day.
A favourite game of Alfie's is designing & playing 'floor is lava's style games using different household items & his indoor gym equipment. We also have fun playing hide & seek round the house, Alfie enjoys finding silly or challenging places to hide.
We also have a large garden with a big trampoline and a swing set with a climbing ladder permanently available to use. During the summer months we have a steel framed pool permanently up for daily swimming & water fun! We have an area with football goals for kicking a ball around & often play tag & other active games such as capture the flag.
We have a dog that Alfie has the daily option of going for a nature walk with. We also meet up with his best friend for walks & occasionally feed the ducks together.
Alfie enjoys playdates with his best friend & a couple of friends from his old school. These are sometimes in person & sometimes online gaming playdates. He is really confident when gaming & it has helped him learn a variety of different social, emotional & literacy skills such as: increased frustration tolerance; turn taking; team work; strategy/strategic planning; how to lose; giving & following instructions; clear communication; patience; compromise etc.
There is a friendly home ed community in our area with a variety of workshops, clubs, meet ups & sessions available. Alfie is showing interest in making new friends & we are considering all our options for future engagement. He has made a few new friends through online gaming with his existing best friend & he has met them in person at playdates as well. Alfie is recovering from autistic burnout and currently finds socialising with new/unknown people quite challenging & tiring. This will no doubt improve in the future but it is not an area we will push because of the fragile nature of burnout recovery. Instead we are focussing on understanding & building capacity & laying strong foundations for future development & engagement.
He also has a number of cousins of varying ages who he is able to meet up with regularly if he wants.
