Core Skills Analysis
English Language Arts
Troy strengthened his English Language Arts skills through a wide mix of reading, writing, grammar, and oral language work. He read five chapter books from the My Weird School collection, practiced nightly read-aloud time, and used EPIC books about animals and other facts to build his reading interest and background knowledge. He also worked on comprehension through One Minute Reader and supplementary workbooks, where he answered questions, typed responses, and learned to turn part of the question into a complete sentence. These activities helped Troy grow in reading fluency, comprehension, sentence construction, vocabulary, and confidence with both fiction and nonfiction texts.
Spelling
Troy developed strong spelling habits by studying 15 new words each week from the DK12 7th-grade list and taking weekly spelling tests. He practiced by reviewing the words, saying them aloud, and sounding them out letter by letter when needed, which showed him how to use phonics and memory together. Because he already knew his words early in the week and could spell them correctly on test day, he demonstrated steady mastery and good study habits. Writing the tests in cursive also connected his spelling work to handwriting fluency and careful letter formation.
Handwriting / Cursive
Troy completed a full cursive workbook from The Good and the Beautiful, which gave him repeated practice in legible handwriting and fine-motor control. He wrote daily copywork, including Bible verses and information about countries and languages, so his cursive practice also supported content learning and attention to detail. Because he reported that long writing made his hand hurt, the workbook likely challenged his stamina while still helping him build endurance over time. His ability to complete the full workbook showed persistence and increasing comfort with written work in cursive.
Grammar and Vocabulary
Troy worked on grammar through the Anton site and built vocabulary daily through Clever Dragons. These lessons helped him practice the structure of English language and improve how he understood and used new words. Since he also answered reading questions and completed written responses, his grammar and vocabulary work likely supported clearer speaking and writing in other tasks. Regular daily practice helped him make steady progress rather than learning these skills only occasionally.
Tips
To keep Troy growing in English, continue the nightly reading routine but occasionally pause to let him summarize the chapter, predict what may happen next, or compare two characters. You could also turn some of his favorite EPIC animal facts into a short oral report or illustrated paragraph so he practices writing without feeling overwhelmed by too much length. For spelling and grammar, try quick game-style reviews such as matching word roots, fixing sentence mistakes, or using his spelling words in funny sentences. Since he enjoys stories more when they are read to him, consider alternating read-alouds with partner reading so he can hear fluent expression and gradually read more himself.
