Core Skills Analysis
English
Jeremy showed strong growth in his early reading and writing skills throughout this activity. He completed a worksheet where he practiced writing and sounding out words as he wrote them, and he produced his best handwriting to date, which showed improved letter formation, control, and effort. He read 5 pages of Shuffle, Whack and FlingI, answered comprehension questions, and finished the fortnight’s folder, showing that he could remember details and respond to what he read. During his session with James, Jeremy played the Stepping Stones reading game, learned one sound with different spellings for /ae/, sorted words into ai, ay, a-e, and a categories, read 5 pages of A Day at the Track with movement for each page, and correctly answered comprehension questions, which showed that he was building phonics knowledge, sound-symbol matching, and reading comprehension. He also read Mole Dug a Hole in full as part of bedtime books, showing stamina and confidence with connected text.
Tips
Jeremy could keep strengthening his reading by practicing the /ae/ spellings in short word lists, then using each word in a sentence to show meaning as well as sound. He would benefit from retelling a story after reading, either orally or by drawing the beginning, middle, and end, to deepen comprehension. To extend handwriting, he could copy a few favorite sentences from his readers with focus on neat spacing, sizing, and starting letters on the line. A fun next step would be a phonics hunt around the house or classroom for words with ck, ng, qu, wh, le, and ed, so he can connect the sound patterns to real-life print.
