Language Arts: Writing
The student used IEW’s University-Ready Writing curriculum to develop advanced composition skills through a structured writing program. The activity supported planning, organizing, drafting, revising, and presenting ideas in a manner appropriate for academic writing. At age 14, the student practiced communicating clearly for future university-level assignments while strengthening independence and confidence as a writer.
Language Arts: Grammar
The student also worked with IEW Fix It! Grammar Level 5, focusing on the accurate construction and editing of sentences. The curriculum provided practice applying grammar conventions while identifying and correcting errors in context. This helped the student improve proofreading habits, precision, and control of written language.
Tips
Tips: Extend the writing work by having the student choose a research question, create an outline, and produce a polished multi-paragraph response using the program’s organizational strategies. Add an editing routine in which the student reads a draft aloud, marks grammar issues, and explains each correction. For an authentic audience, the student could submit the final piece to a family newsletter, school publication, or presentation. A reflection journal can help the student identify which writing and grammar strategies were most useful.
