Science
Tony designed and created a habitat for a pet rock using materials available around the house. If he revised the habitat, he also practiced evaluating a design and making changes based on how well the parts worked together.
Engineering and Design
Tony used a simple design process by identifying a goal, working with available materials, and constructing a habitat for his pet rock. He made decisions about which objects could serve as shelter, decoration, or boundaries, even though the habitat was imaginative rather than functional for a living animal. The activity encouraged creativity, resourcefulness, and flexible thinking. It also showed him that designers can create models to represent ideas.

Tips: Invite Tony to label a drawing of the habitat and write a short explanation of each material’s purpose. Compare the pet-rock habitat with a real habitat, discussing what living things actually need and what makes a rock nonliving. Encourage him to redesign the habitat using a limited number of materials, then explain what changed and why. Finish with a brief presentation or photo journal so he can practice describing his process and reflecting on his choices.
