Core Skills Analysis
Science
Joella explored living things at Newport Aquarium and Columbus Zoo. She touched a sea snail in a touch tank, observed different aquarium creatures and zoo animals, and fed a giraffe, giving her firsthand experience with animal features, habitats, and feeding behaviors. The 4D video, “Flight to Africa,” added a sensory way to learn about animals and their environments.
Language Arts
Joella practiced observation and communication by experiencing and noticing many sea and land animals. She could use descriptive words to talk about the sea snail, giraffe, other creatures, and the rides she enjoyed. Recalling the aquarium and zoo visits also supported sequencing as she remembered what she did at each location.
Social Studies
Joella learned about places beyond her everyday surroundings by visiting an aquarium and a zoo that featured animals from different environments. Feeding a giraffe and watching “Flight to Africa” connected her experiences to wildlife and the African continent. These experiences helped her begin understanding that animals live in varied regions around the world.
Math
Joella encountered informal math opportunities while moving through two large attractions and participating in several activities. She could compare the sizes, shapes, and numbers of different animals and notice the order of events, including rides such as the train, dinosaur water ride, and carousel. These experiences supported early counting, comparing, and sequencing through real-world exploration.
Sensory and Social-Emotional Learning
Joella engaged with new sensory experiences when she touched a sea snail, fed a giraffe, rode multiple attractions, and watched a 4D video. These activities gave her opportunities to respond to different textures, movements, sights, and sounds in an exciting public setting. Her participation showed active engagement and curiosity during hands-on exploration.
Tips
Tips: Invite Joella to draw her favorite animal and dictate or write one sentence about where it lived and what it ate. Create a simple animal sorting game using categories such as ocean animals, land animals, and animals from Africa, then count how many belong in each group. Use toy animals or pictures to retell the visit in order, from the aquarium to the zoo and the rides. If possible, read about sea snails and giraffes together and compare how each animal moves, eats, and interacts with its environment.
