Ella completed Lesson 1.18 on adjectives and predicate adjectives by filling sentence blanks with descriptive, proper, and predicate adjectives. She practiced placing adjectives before nouns, as in “wooden goose,” “fresh water,” and “French dish,” and after linking verbs, as in “oranges smelled sweet” and “the ambulance’s siren sounded loud.” Ella also identified adjectives in butterfly- and moth-themed sentences, including words such as “tiny,” “overlapping,” “amazing,” “monarch,” “colorful,” “long,” “sweet,” “brand-new,” and “paper.” Through this work, Ella strengthened her ability to explain how adjectives add specific information to nouns or describe subjects after linking verbs, while also practicing capitalization of proper adjectives.
Tips
Tips: Invite Ella to create a two-column adjective hunt from a favorite book, placing ordinary adjectives in one column and proper adjectives in the other. Next, have her write a short paragraph describing a butterfly, animal, room, or favorite place using at least five adjectives and two predicate adjectives with linking verbs such as is, seems, looks, or sounds. For a hands-on grammar challenge, read her sentences aloud and ask her to move an adjective from before a noun to after a linking verb when the sentence still makes sense. End with an editing pass in which she circles each adjective, identifies the noun or subject it modifies, and checks that every proper adjective begins with a capital letter.
