Core Skills Analysis

Language Arts: Phonics and Reading

Ezra read and practiced the syllable patterns ba, be, bi, bo, and bu with his mom. He connected each pattern to word examples, learning how changing the vowel after the letter b created different sound patterns in words. Working through the set supported his recognition of letter-sound relationships and his early decoding skills. Saying examples together also gave Ezra practice hearing and distinguishing vowel sounds.

Communication and Vocabulary

Ezra and his mom came up with word examples for each of the five sound patterns. As he connected spoken words with the patterns he had read, he practiced recalling vocabulary and explaining how words began. Their shared activity also gave Ezra an opportunity to exchange ideas and learn through conversation.

Tips

Tips Build on Ezra’s practice by making a small picture-and-word card for each pattern—ba, be, bi, bo, and bu—and sorting the cards by their beginning sound. Invite him to go on a sound hunt in a favorite book or around the home, then read the words aloud together and notice which vowel follows b. For a playful review, take turns choosing a pattern and naming or drawing a matching word. You could also make a simple five-page mini-book, with one sound pattern on each page and Ezra’s chosen word examples.
