Core Skills Analysis
Science and Nature
Aleah explored the outdoors by collecting rocks and driftwood and learning about a new type of fish. These experiences gave Aleah opportunities to notice that natural materials differ and to build interest in living things found in the environment. Fishing and swimming also brought Aleah into direct contact with a waterside setting, supporting curiosity about aquatic habitats. Together, the activities helped Aleah connect outdoor observations with learning about nature.
Physical Education
Aleah kayaked and swam, taking part in two different forms of movement in the water. Kayaking involved coordinating paddling with the movement of the boat, while swimming required using the body to move through water. These activities gave Aleah opportunities to practise physical coordination and experience active recreation outdoors.
Practical Life Skills
Aleah spent time camping in a tent and gathered driftwood during the trip. Camping offered experience with using a tent as an outdoor shelter, while collecting driftwood involved noticing and gathering natural materials. Aleah also had a fire as part of the camping experience, providing an opportunity to observe how fire can be part of outdoor recreation.
Tips
Tips After the trip, invite Aleah to sort the collected rocks by visible features such as color, shape, or texture, then draw or describe the groups. Look up the fish Aleah learned about and make a simple habitat card showing its name, appearance, and where it lives. Use a map or a homemade route sketch to retell the camping and kayaking adventure in order. For an experiential extension, plan a supervised nature walk where Aleah observes and sketches local natural materials without removing anything from their setting.
