Core Skills Analysis
Language Arts and Spelling
Class used letter tiles to practice the week’s spelling words, arranging letters to work with each word’s spelling and letter order. This hands-on practice helped Class connect individual letters with written words and reinforce familiar spelling patterns. Class also spent time reading independently, applying reading skills to a chosen text. By beginning the weekly fluency passages, Class practiced reading connected text as part of ongoing fluency work.
Mathematics
Class shaped play-dough into corn kernels, counted them, and placed the matching number of kernels on numbered cards. This activity gave Class concrete practice counting objects and connecting a quantity with its written numeral. Matching each set of kernels to a numbered card also reinforced number recognition and one-to-one counting.
Geometry and Visual Arts
Class used geometric pattern blocks to create different farm animals, combining shapes to form recognizable pictures. This gave Class practice noticing and arranging geometric shapes while exploring how smaller pieces could work together in a larger design. Creating multiple animals also offered an opportunity to use visual imagination and make choices about how to represent each subject.
Tips
Tips Extend the spelling practice by inviting Class to build a word with the letter tiles, read it aloud, and use it in a sentence. For number practice, make a pretend farm stand where Class counts play-dough produce into numbered baskets, then checks each quantity. Explore geometry by looking for shapes in animal pictures or farm objects and recreating one with pattern blocks. To build on reading, have Class reread a short passage and draw one detail remembered from it.
