Core Skills Analysis
Taekwondo
Will took on the role of a Taekwondo judge and learned about aspects of evaluating actions in a way similar to tournament scoring. This gave him practice attending to what happened and applying judging criteria rather than participating only as a competitor. He developed an understanding that consistent, fair evaluation depends on observing actions and making decisions according to shared rules. The activity also introduced him to the responsibility involved in judging a sport.
Tips
Tips Build on Will’s judging experience with a mini tournament using a published set of Taekwondo scoring rules: have him explain each decision and compare judgments with another learner. He could watch a short, age-appropriate Taekwondo demonstration and record observable actions before discussing how rules guide scoring. Invite him to design a simple score sheet, then reflect on how clear criteria support fairness. To connect the activity to communication, ask him to write a brief explanation of one judging decision for a competitor.
Learning Standards
- Science — Grade 1, 1.1 (Scientific and Engineering Practices): A limited conceptual connection: judging involves observing actions and using criteria to make a decision. This is not a direct match to the grade-level standard.
- English Language Arts — Grade 8, 8.W.1 (Writing): The suggested written explanation of a judging decision offers practice making a clear claim and supporting it with evidence from an observed action; this is an extension activity rather than a demonstrated activity in the description.
Try This Next
- Create a judging worksheet with columns for observed action, applicable criterion, and scoring decision.
- Write three quiz questions about why judges use shared rules and how they can make evaluations consistently.
- Draft a short explanation of a hypothetical judging decision, citing only the action observed and the relevant rule.
