Core Skills Analysis

Language Arts

Adalynn completed two pages focused on short i words, practicing how to recognize and read words with that vowel sound. Adalynn also completed a page on breaking words into syllables, learning to hear and separate the parts within spoken and written words. During the family story time, Adalynn listened to stories and engaged with books, extending the day’s reading practice in a relaxed setting.

Mathematics

Adalynn completed 21 addition problems involving facts from 9 through 12, practicing addition and strengthening familiarity with these number combinations. Adalynn also practiced counting change, applying counting skills to money. By telling time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock, Adalynn connected number patterns and clock hands with everyday timekeeping.

Science

Adalynn watched an episode of *The Magic School Bus* about vibration and sound again, choosing to revisit the topic. The episode gave Adalynn another opportunity to explore how vibrations relate to sounds through a science-focused program. Watching it again also allowed Adalynn to return to a subject of interest and build familiarity with its ideas.

Social-Emotional Learning

When the library story time was canceled, Adalynn talked with a parent about disappointment when plans change and then took part in a story time at home. This helped Adalynn put the feeling of disappointment into words and experience a changed plan alongside a supportive alternative. During the tent sleepover, Adalynn and a parent talked about overcoming fears, giving Adalynn a chance to reflect on courage in a reassuring conversation.

Nature and Observation

Adalynn spent the night in an outdoor tent and watched the sunrise from it after waking. This gave Adalynn a direct experience of being outdoors overnight and observing a change in the sky as morning began. The experience also provided a natural setting for conversation about fears and for sharing stories and puzzle books before sleep.

Tips

Tips Turn the short-i practice into a word hunt by looking for examples in books or around the home, then clap the syllables in each word together. Set up a pretend shop where Adalynn can count coins to pay for small items, and use a paper-plate clock to practice showing “o’clock” and “half past.” Explore sound with a rubber band stretched over a box: pluck it, observe its vibration, and compare sounds made with gentle and stronger plucks. To revisit the tent experience, draw or dictate a “sunrise story” and talk about one small, manageable challenge that can help build confidence.

Book Recommendations

  • The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle: A richly illustrated story featuring a cricket and other insects, offering a playful connection to sounds in nature.
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault: A rhythmic alphabet story that invites young readers to notice letters, sounds, and word patterns.
  • A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen: A humorous picture book about a camping trip that connects with Adalynn’s outdoor tent experience.
