Core Skills Analysis
Physical Education
The child played outside by throwing coloured tennis balls toward a bucket. This gave the child practice coordinating arm movements with looking at a target and adjusting the direction of each throw. Repeating the activity supported gross-motor control and hand–eye coordination. The child also shared the balls, practising cooperative play alongside movement.
Mathematics
The child encountered different colours while handling and throwing the tennis balls, creating an opportunity to notice and name attributes. A bucket provided a clear target, so the child could explore spatial ideas such as toward, near, and far as the balls travelled. The repeated throws also offered an informal experience of comparing outcomes, such as which balls reached the bucket.
Social and Emotional Learning
The child shared the tennis balls during play, practising taking turns and participating with others around a shared activity. Aiming at the bucket gave the child a simple purpose to pursue while playing. The child could experience the activity as a cooperative outdoor game in which both movement and sharing were part of the play.
Tips
Tips Turn the game into a playful investigation by inviting the child to sort the balls by colour before taking turns to throw. Place the bucket at different distances and ask the child to notice how changing its position affects the throw. Count aloud how many balls land in the bucket, or compare results for two colours without making the game competitive. Finish by inviting the child to draw the bucket, balls, and their favourite moment from the game.
