Core Skills Analysis
Science and Engineering
At the Science Museum’s Tinkering Studio, Adalynn connected different wires on wooden blocks to try to make a light switch come on. This hands-on activity introduced Adalynn to how electrical connections can be explored through testing and tinkering. By changing the wire connections and observing whether the switch lit up, Adalynn practiced experimenting and noticing cause and effect. Adalynn also explored magnetic shapes, discovering how pieces could join together to form castles and houses.
History and Paleontology
Adalynn dug for fossils in the dinosaur area and went through two dinosaur treks, engaging with evidence and stories about prehistoric life. The fossil-digging activity offered an introduction to how paleontologists search for and study remains from the past. The treks gave Adalynn opportunities to encounter dinosaur-related information and connect it with the fossil activity. Together, these experiences supported curiosity about life long before people lived on Earth.
Mathematics and Spatial Reasoning
While building castles and houses with magnetic shapes, Adalynn combined individual pieces to create larger structures. This gave Adalynn practice recognizing shapes and considering how their sides and positions fit together. Building also encouraged spatial reasoning as Adalynn planned where pieces could go and explored how arrangements formed familiar structures. The activity connected early geometry with creative construction.
Tips
Tips Revisit the switch idea with a child-safe circuit kit and invite Adalynn to predict what might happen before trying each connection. Make a simple fossil-search game by hiding imitation fossils in sand or soil and talking about how careful digging can reveal clues from the past. Use magnetic shapes to build a museum display or dinosaur habitat, then count the pieces and describe the shapes used. Afterward, invite Adalynn to draw a favorite part of the museum visit and explain the steps taken to explore or build it.

Try This Next
- Draw a circuit map showing the wooden blocks and wire connections Adalynn tried.
- Create a fossil-dig worksheet: sketch a pretend fossil and label the clues found during a careful search.
- Give a magnetic-shape building challenge: make a castle or house, then count and name the shapes used.
- Ask: “What did you build with the magnetic shapes?” and “What might a fossil tell us about a dinosaur?”
