Core Skills Analysis
Language Arts: Grammar and Sentence Structure
Soleil-Rose practised identifying prepositions and prepositional phrases, including introductory prepositional phrases, and applied her understanding while working with sentences. She learned about simple and compound sentences and coordinating conjunctions, then used that knowledge to complete several sentences. This work helped her recognize how sentence parts and conjunctions shape sentence structure. Soleil-Rose also replaced the word “said” in sentences, practising how to choose alternative dialogue verbs.
Language Arts: Editing and Writing
Soleil-Rose proofread and edited an opening paragraph for an informational essay about a lynx. She also reviewed capitalization rules for family relationships, developing her attention to conventions that support clear, polished writing. By editing a paragraph on an animal topic, she practised applying language skills within informational writing.
Reading
Soleil-Rose read chapter 7 of the book *Milo*. This gave her practice following a book across chapters and engaging with its written narrative. Her reading also complemented her language work by keeping her in contact with sentence forms and vocabulary in a book.
Spelling and Review Skills
Soleil-Rose practised her grammar cards and completed a spelling test. These activities gave her opportunities to retrieve and review language knowledge, as well as practise spelling words in a test format. Together, they supported her developing accuracy and confidence with written language.
Tips
Tips Build on Soleil-Rose’s grammar practice by inviting her to mark prepositional phrases in a short paragraph, then move one introductory phrase to a different position and notice how the sentence changes. She could create pairs of simple sentences and combine them with coordinating conjunctions, explaining how the ideas connect. Extend the lynx essay work with a brief research-and-writing project: gather facts from a reliable source, draft an informational paragraph, and proofread for capitalization and sentence variety. To connect reading with writing, she could keep a chapter response journal for *Milo*, recording a memorable detail and trying one alternative to “said” in an original line of dialogue.
