Core Skills Analysis

Language Arts — Reading

Daivey independently read novels at home, practicing the sustained attention and reading fluency needed to follow longer texts. As he read, he worked with written language and encountered how authors developed characters, settings, and events across a story. The activity gave him practice making meaning from text on his own and building confidence as an independent reader. For a 7-year-old, choosing to spend time reading novels also supported curiosity and enjoyment of books.

Language Arts — Literary Understanding

By reading novels from beginning to end or across multiple reading sessions, Daivey practiced keeping track of a story’s sequence and connecting details from different parts of a text. He encountered narrative elements such as characters, problems, and plot developments, and had opportunities to interpret how these elements worked together. Independent reading also helped him develop familiarity with the ways stories can communicate ideas and emotions. These experiences supported early comprehension and thoughtful engagement with literature.

Tips

Tips After a reading session, invite Daivey to sketch a favorite scene and explain how it connects to the story, then help him create a simple beginning-middle-end timeline. He could keep a reader’s notebook with a new word, a question, and a favorite moment from each novel, strengthening vocabulary and reflection without interrupting the pleasure of reading. To make stories tangible, encourage him to act out a scene with toys or family members, or invent a new ending and explain how it changes the characters’ choices. A relaxed weekly book chat can help him share what he noticed and hear different interpretations.
