n history over the last 2 weeks, we have read about the following people: 1) Hernan Cortez and Pizarro, who were both conquistadors of Spain. In this lesson, we also learned about the Maya Empire and the Inca Empire. We talked about how the Spaniards conquered them and how they were after their gold and power. 2). Ferdinan Magellan was an explorer, who wanted to sail to the Spice Islands by sailing West instead of sailing East. He found a waterway through South America, which is today called the Magellan Striat. We mapped his journey around the globe. He had hoped to make it all the way to the Spice Islands but he ended up being killed in the Philippines. His crew did make it to the Spice Islands and then sailed back home to Spain. 3) We also talked about Suleiman and the Ottoman Turks this week. He wanted to expand his empire in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He was an Islamic Sultan. The center of his empire was in Constantinople. He took control over two ports in the Mediterranean Sea. This gave him control over trade in that region. Since he was in control of the trade routes, this made him very wealthy. 4) We also have begun to talk about the Protestant Reformation (Martin Luther) and Swiss Reformation (Ulrich Zwingli). We have talked about the Anabapstists being persecuted for their beliefs.
