Muhsin has been assessed by his tutor in phonics, blending, segmenting, and letter formation. Currently covering phase 3 Muhsin has learned sounds such as ch, sh, th, ng, ee, oo, or, ar, ur, and er each word sound Muhsin learns he will write sentences using the new sound and read a book that will cover that particular sound. The books he reads for phonics are from different authors such as Julia Donaldson Songbirds, the whole series Jolly Phonics books, and Biff, Chip, and Kipper by Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta. Currently, Muhsin is learning these sounds, igh, oi, oa, and ow, and is confident at sounding out unfamiliar words and can confidently blend letter sounds to construct words. Muhsin is quietly spoken and has an extensive range of vocabulary to express himself when he wants to, he expresses his needs, feelings, and thoughts confidently in a small group and on a one-to-one basis with an adult. Alongside phonics we utilise CGP books and Collins for Grammar spelling and comprehension Muhsin is developing his reading comprehension skills, and is learning to understand and discuss the main idea of a story he makes predictions to identify characters and settings. He is also beginning to ask and answer questions about the text and make connections to his own experiences. When I read story books to Muhsin he is able to narrate the story back and ask questions using words such as how, why, what, when, and where.
