Today we learned how to use the drum carder to process wool. This is a fun machine with two cylinders or “drums” covered in small wire teeth. As the handle is turned, both drums rotate. The fiber is fed onto the smaller drum (called the “licker-in”), which then transfers it to the larger drum (the “swift”), combing and aligning the fibers as they move. When the wool comes off the sheep or alpaca, it is clumpy and tangled. The process of carding not only helps in aligning the fibers but also helps in removing impurities, dirt, and short fibers, ensuring a smooth and consistent yarn or felt.
