What is a Number Sentence?

A number sentence is a way to show a math problem using numbers and symbols, like + (plus) and - (minus). It tells us how to put numbers together or take them apart!

Types of Number Sentences

There are two main types of number sentences:

  • Addition Number Sentences: These show when we want to put numbers together. For example, 2 + 3 = 5 means if you have 2 apples and get 3 more, you will have 5 apples in total.
  • Subtraction Number Sentences: These show when we want to take numbers away. For example, 5 - 2 = 3 means if you have 5 cookies and you eat 2, you will have 3 cookies left.

How to Make a Number Sentence

  1. Think of a simple math problem.
  2. Choose the right numbers to use.
  3. Add the + or - symbol based on what you want to do (add or subtract).
  4. Write down the answer with an = sign.
