What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria turn sunlight into food. It's how they make their own energy using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide!

  1. Sunlight: The first ingredient needed for photosynthesis is sunlight. Plants have special parts called chlorophyll, which is found in their leaves. This green pigment helps capture the sun's energy.
  2. Water: Plants take in water through their roots. This water travels up through the plant to the leaves.
  3. Carbon Dioxide: Plants also absorb a gas called carbon dioxide from the air, which enters through tiny openings in their leaves called stomata.
  4. The Process: When sunlight shines on the leaves, the chlorophyll absorbs the light energy. Then the plant uses this energy to combine water and carbon dioxide to create sugar (food for the plant) and oxygen, which it releases into the air.

Why is Photosynthesis Important?

Photosynthesis is super important because it is how plants grow. It also provides oxygen, which all living things need to breathe. Without photosynthesis, there wouldn’t be plants, and that would mean less food and oxygen for us!
