Early Life
Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of immigrants: her mother came from India and her father from Jamaica. From a young age, Kamala was very bright and loved to learn.
Education
Kamala attended Howard University, a historically black college, where she studied political science and economics. After that, she went to the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, to become a lawyer.
Career as a Lawyer
After finishing school, Kamala worked as a prosecutor, which means she helped to make sure that laws were followed, especially in cases involving crimes. She became the District Attorney of San Francisco, where she worked hard to make the community a safer place.
Political Achievements
In 2011, Kamala became the Attorney General of California, the first woman and first person of African-American and Asian-American descent to hold that office. She fought for justice and worked on important issues like marriage equality and protecting the environment.
U.S. Senate
In 2016, Kamala was elected as a U.S. Senator. This is a very important job because Senators help make laws for the entire country! Kamala was one of the first women of color to serve in this position and worked on many issues including immigration, healthcare, and civil rights.
Vice President of the United States
In 2020, Kamala Harris made history by becoming the Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman, and the first woman of African-American and Asian-American descent, to hold this position! As Vice President, Kamala works with the President and helps make important decisions for the country.
