What is a Bone?

Bones are hard parts in our body that help us stand up and be strong! They are like the building blocks that make up our skeleton, which is the frame that holds our body together.

Why Do We Need Bones?

Bones have many important jobs:

  • Support: They help support our body so we can stand and move.
  • Protection: Bones protect our organs. For example, our skull is a bone that protects our brain, and our ribcage protects our heart and lungs.
  • Movement: Bones work with our muscles to help us move around. When we want to run, jump, or play, our muscles pull on bones to make our body move!
  • Blood Production: Some bones make blood for our body. Blood helps carry nutrients and oxygen around our body.

How Many Bones Do We Have?

When we are babies, we have about 300 bones, but as we grow up, some of these bones join together. In adults, there are 206 bones in the body!

Fun Fact!

Did you know that bones can be strong, just like steel? They are much lighter than you think, but they can hold a lot of weight!

So, bones are really important for our body to be safe, strong, and ready to play!
