All About Emus for Little Explorers!

Today, we're going to have a super fun time learning about emus! But first, let’s talk about what an emu is. Emus are large, flightless birds that come from Australia. They have long legs and can run very fast!

Crafting Our Emu Hats

Step 1: Let’s get crafty! We can make a special hat that looks just like an emu. You will need some paper, scissors, and glue.

  1. Cut out a large oval shape for the top of the hat.
  2. Next, cut out feathers using different colors of paper. Emus can have brown and black feathers!
  3. Glue the feathers onto your oval hat.
  4. Finally, you can attach the hat to a strip of paper, so it fits on your head. Now you’re ready to be an emu!

Pretending to Be an Emu

Step 2: Now that we have our emu hats, let’s pretend to be emus! You can:

  • Run: Use your long emu legs to run around. Remember, emus can run really fast!
  • Walk: Waddle like an emu. Move your arms like wings while walking!
  • Eat: Emus eat fruits, seeds, and even insects! Pretend to peck at the ground for food.

Visiting the Animal Enclosure

Step 3: Let’s go see a real emu at the animal enclosure! When we get there, look for the emu taking a mud bath.

Emus love to take baths in the mud because it helps keep them cool and protects their skin from the sun. We can watch how they splash around and have fun.

What did you learn about emus today? Let’s remember all the fun we had with our crafts and pretend play!
