What is the Tundra Like?
The tundra is a very cold and special place. Winters there last a long time. They are dark and very cold. The sun doesn’t shine much during winter, so it feels even colder!
When summer comes, it is very short and cool. Because summer doesn’t last long, the plants have to grow very fast.
How Do Plants Grow in the Tundra?
Because it's so cold and windy, plants in the tundra can’t grow tall. Instead, they grow close to the ground where it’s warmer and less windy. This helps them survive the tough weather.
These plants use the short summer to grow quickly before the cold comes back.
