Learn fun and interesting facts about puma babies, also called puma cubs, including what they look like and how they grow, explained simply for 8-year-old children.
Puma babies are called puma cubs. They are the young of the puma, which is a big wild cat also known as a cougar or mountain lion.
When puma cubs are born, they look very different from adult pumas! They have spotted fur with lots of little dark spots all over their bodies. This helps them hide from danger when they are very small.
They are also quite small and blind at first, only opening their eyes after about two weeks.
As puma cubs grow older, they start to lose their spots, and their fur turns the plain tan or brown color of an adult puma. They learn to climb, stalk, and hunt by playing and watching their mother.
The spots help keep the cubs safe by camouflaging them in the trees, leaves, and bushes. Once they're bigger and stronger, they don’t need spots anymore.
Puma cubs usually stay with their mom for about 1 to 2 years before they go off on their own!
Isn't it amazing how baby pumas look so different from grown-up pumas?
