Learn in simple terms why children and everyone else get crusties in their eyes, what causes them, and how to keep your eyes clean and healthy.
Have you ever noticed those little crusty bits around your eyes when you wake up? Those are called eye crusties, and they happen to everyone, even kids like you!
Eye crusties, sometimes called sleep or eye boogers, are dried-up bits of stuff that come out of your eyes. They are made from tears mixed with dust, dirt, and tiny bits of skin or mucus.
Your eyes are always making tears to keep them clean and wet. Tears help wash away things like dust and germs that don’t belong in your eyes. When your eyes get rid of these things, some of the tears and dirt mix together and dry up, especially at night when you aren’t blinking. This dried-up stuff is the eye crusties.
Yes! Eye crusties are perfectly normal and show that your eyes are working to stay clean. Sometimes you might get more crusties if you have a little eye irritation or a cold, but usually, they’re harmless.
If your eyes get red, itchy, very crusty, or hurt a lot, it’s always good to tell a grown-up so they can help you see a doctor if needed.
So remember, eye crusties are just a part of how your eyes keep themselves clean every day!
