What is Utilitarianism?
Imagine you have some candy and you want to share it with your friends. Utilitarianism is a way of thinking about making choices that try to make the most people happy. The idea is to pick the action that causes the greatest amount of happiness or the least amount of sadness for everyone involved.
Who Thought of This Idea?
A long time ago, thinkers like Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill helped explain utilitarianism. They believed that when making choices, people should think about what brings the most happiness overall.
How Does Utilitarianism Work?
- Look at the options: Think about the different things you could do.
- Think about the results: Imagine what would happen to you and others after each choice.
- Choose the best one: Pick the choice that makes the most people happy or feels the best for everyone.
An Example
Suppose you have one slice of cake, and two friends want it. You can either give it to one friend or share it by cutting it in half. Utilitarianism would say to choose the option that makes the most happiness. Sharing the cake half-and-half might make both friends happier, so that could be the better choice.
Why is Utilitarianism Important?
This way of thinking helps people make fair decisions by thinking about everyone’s feelings, not just their own. It teaches us to care about others and to try to do good things that help as many people as possible.
Remember
Utilitarianism is like a guide to being kind and thoughtful, helping us think about the effects of what we do so we can spread happiness and reduce sadness in the world.
