What Are Roughing and Finishing Cuts?

When making something by shaping metal or wood (we call this production), we often do two types of cutting: roughing cuts and finishing cuts. They help us shape a material step by step.

1. Roughing Cuts

  • Purpose: These cuts are the first cuts and remove a large amount of material quickly.
  • How it's done: The machine cuts deep and fast, but not very smoothly.
  • Result: After roughing, the part looks close to the final shape but still needs some work.

2. Finishing Cuts

  • Purpose: These are the last cuts that make the part perfect.
  • How it's done: The machine cuts slowly and carefully, removing only a little material.
  • Result: The part now has its exact size, smooth surfaces, and fits perfectly where it needs to.

Why Do We Use Both Cuts?

If we tried to cut perfectly in one go, it would take a very long time and could be dangerous or damage the tool. So, roughing cuts get rid of most of the extra material fast, and finishing cuts make the part just right.

This way, the whole process is quicker and the final product is of high quality.
