What is Chip Formation?

Imagine you have a big block of wood, and you want to make a shape out of it. To do this, you use a sharp tool like a knife or a saw. When you press or move the tool against the wood, small pieces of wood start to come off. These little pieces are called "chips." This process of making chips by cutting into the material is called chip formation.

How Does Chip Formation Happen?

  1. Tool Touches the Material: The sharp edge of the tool presses against the wood or metal.
  2. Material Breaks Off: Because the tool is sharp and strong, it breaks tiny pieces (chips) off the material.
  3. Chips Come Off: These chips move away from the main material, making it smaller or the right shape.

Why is Chip Formation Important?

Chip formation is how we shape things! When car parts, toys, or furniture are made, machines cut material by forming chips to create the right shapes and sizes.

Fun Example:

Think about peeling an apple. When you peel, the sharp peeler removes thin strips (chips) of the apple's skin. This is like chip formation!
