Learn how tarantula webs work as hunting nets, cozy homes, and safe egg sacs in a simple way for kids aged 9.
Tarantulas are a type of big, hairy spider. Unlike some other spiders, tarantulas don’t always spin big, complex webs like a spider web you might see in a garden. But they do use silk, which they make themselves, to do some really cool things!
While tarantulas don’t usually make messy hunting nets like some spiders, they sometimes use silk to make small trip lines or sticky threads around their burrows. When an insect or small animal touches these threads, the tarantula can feel the vibration and know it's time to catch dinner!
Tarantulas live in burrows or holes in the ground, and they line these cozy homes with silk. This makes their burrow soft and comfortable, kind of like putting a comfy blanket on a bed!
When a female tarantula lays eggs, she wraps them in a silken egg sac. This silk sac keeps the eggs safe and warm until baby spiders hatch. It’s like a special silk blanket just for spider babies.
So, even though tarantulas don’t build big webs like some spiders, their silk is very important. It helps them catch food, live comfortably, and protect their babies!
