What Are Deciduous and Coniferous Trees?

Hi there! Let's talk about two special kinds of trees: deciduous trees and coniferous trees.

Deciduous Trees

Imagine trees that wear big, flat green leaves all summer. When it gets cold in the fall, these leaves change colors to red, yellow, or orange and then fall off. In winter, the tree looks bare without leaves, but in spring, new green leaves grow again! These trees are called deciduous trees. Examples are maple and oak trees.

Coniferous Trees

Now think about trees that look like big green triangles (like a Christmas tree). These trees have pointy needles instead of flat leaves. They keep their needles all year long, even in winter! They also make cones (like pinecones) instead of flowers or fruits. These trees are called coniferous trees. Examples are pine and fir trees.

Easy Way To Remember

  • Deciduous trees - Lose their leaves in fall and grow new ones in spring.
  • Coniferous trees - Have needles and keep them all year.

Isn't it fun to know how trees change and grow? Next time you see trees outside, you can try to see if they are deciduous or coniferous!
