The Namaqua sandgrouse is a very clever bird that lives in dry deserts where water is hard to find. When the sandgrouse finds water, it soaks its belly feathers completely. These feathers are special because they can hold water like a sponge! Then, the sandgrouse flies back to its thirsty chicks who are waiting in their nest far away from water. When the sandgrouse gets home, the baby chicks drink the water that is held in its feathers. This clever way of carrying water helps the chicks stay alive in the hot, dry desert where there isn’t much water to drink.
