Plants need a few important things to grow well: nutrients, water, air, and space for their roots. Good soil helps provide all of these things!

1. Nutrients in the Soil

Soil has tiny bits of things called nutrients, like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are like vitamins that plants need to grow strong and healthy. Better soil has more of these nutrients, so plants get all the food they need.

2. Water Holding

Good soil holds water well. Water is super important because plants use it to make food through a process called photosynthesis. If the soil is too sandy, water drains too fast and the plants don’t get enough. But good soil keeps the right amount of water near the roots.

3. Air for Roots

Roots need air to breathe, just like we do! Good soil has tiny spaces or pores that let air move through. This helps roots stay healthy and grow better.

4. Space for Roots to Grow

Better soil is loose and crumbly, so roots can easily spread out and explore for even more nutrients and water. If the soil is too hard or compacted, roots can’t grow well.

In short: Plants grow more in better soil because the soil gives them the nutrients, water, air, and space their roots need to grow big and strong!
