Learn simple and fun steps to help 6-year-old children operate a kayak, use paddles correctly, and work together as a team on the water.
Kayaking is a fun water activity where you can explore lakes or rivers in a small boat called a kayak. When you're 6 years old, it's important to learn how to use your paddle properly and work with your partner if you are paddling together.
Before even going near the kayak, always wear a life jacket. It keeps you safe if you fall into the water.
Sit down in the middle of the kayak. Make sure your legs are comfortable and your feet can touch the foot pegs (little rests).
To move forward, put one blade of the paddle into the water near your feet on one side.
Pull the paddle back towards your hip through the water.
Then put the other blade on the other side and do the same.
Keep alternating sides to move straight.
If two people are in the kayak, talk and decide who will paddle on which side.
Paddle together at the same time, so the kayak moves straight and smoothly.
If you want to turn, one person paddles while the other pauses or paddles lightly on the opposite side.
Always listen to your grown-ups and have fun exploring!
