What is a Kayak?
A kayak is a small boat that you sit in and move by using a paddle. It can float on the water, like a river or lake.
How to Use a Paddle
- Hold the paddle with both hands, one on each side.
- Make sure your hands are about shoulder-width apart.
- Dip one side of the paddle into the water and pull it back to move the kayak forward.
- Switch sides, putting the other side of the paddle into the water and pulling back.
- Keep practicing to row smoothly—like you’re climbing out of the water with the paddle!
How to Work as a Team in a Kayak
If you are in a kayak with a friend (a two-person kayak), you will both need to paddle together:
- Listen to each other and paddle at the same time.
- If one person speeds up, the kayak can turn or stop—so keep the same pace.
- Talk with your partner, say “ready, paddle” to start together.
- Help each other stay balanced and have fun!
Safety Tips
Always wear a life jacket to stay safe in the water.
Make sure an adult is with you when kayaking.
Practice paddling in calm, shallow water first.
Summary
Operating a kayak is easy and fun! Hold your paddle correctly, take turns paddling on each side, and work as a team by paddling together. Remember to always be safe and listen to your grown-ups.
