What is a Piston?

A piston is a part inside an engine or a machine that moves up and down. It looks like a small metal cylinder that fits tightly inside a tube called a cylinder.

How Does a Piston Work?

  1. Inside the Cylinder: The piston sits inside a cylinder, which is like a tube that guides the piston up and down.
  2. Burning Fuel Makes Power: In an engine, a mixture of fuel and air is burned inside the cylinder. When the fuel burns, it produces hot gases that push the piston down. This is like blowing up a balloon and then letting the air out—it pushes things as the air leaves.
  3. Piston Moves Up and Down: When the piston is pushed down by the hot gases, it moves inside the cylinder. Then, the piston comes back up to get ready for the next fuel mixture to burn.
  4. Turning Movement: The up and down movement of the piston is changed into a spinning movement by a part called the crankshaft. This spinning motion is what makes the car's wheels or other machine parts move.

Why is the Piston Important?

The piston is important because it helps turn the energy from burning fuel into movement. Without pistons, engines wouldn’t work and cars, motorcycles, and many other machines would not move.

Imagine you are pushing a swing. When you push down, the swing moves forward and up. The piston does something similar inside the engine to keep everything moving.
