- When a penguin swims, if a predator looks at it from above (from the sky or a big fish), the penguin's black back blends in with the dark ocean water. So, it’s hard to see.
- If a predator looks at the penguin from below (from under the water), the penguin’s white belly blends in with the bright light coming from the surface. That way, it looks like the light shining through the water.
This kind of coloring is called camouflage, and it helps the penguin stay safe by hiding it from animals that want to eat it.
