What Are Living Things?

Living things are all around us! They include animals, plants, people, and even tiny creatures like bugs. But what makes something a living thing?

Signs of Living Things

Living things do a few special things that help us know they are alive:

  • They grow: Just like when you were a baby and grew taller, animals and plants grow too!
  • They need food: Living things eat or take in energy to stay alive.
  • They breathe: Animals and plants need air or some way to get energy from their surroundings.
  • They can move: Animals can move from place to place. Some plants might move parts like leaves or flowers.
  • They can reproduce: Living things can have babies or make new plants so there can be more of them.
  • They respond to their surroundings: For example, plants bend toward sunlight, and animals run away if they feel scared.

Types of Living Things

There are many kinds of living things, but here are some big groups:

  • Animals: Like dogs, birds, fish, and even insects.
  • Plants: Trees, flowers, grass, and tiny plants like moss.
  • Microscopic Life: Tiny living things like bacteria that you can’t see without a microscope.

Why Are Living Things Important?

Living things help each other. For example, plants make oxygen that animals and people need to breathe. Animals can help plants spread seeds to grow more plants. We all live on the Earth together, so taking care of living things is very important!

Fun Activity

Next time you go outside, try to find and name some living things! You can look at trees, bugs, birds, or even the grass. Remember the signs of living things to help you spot them.
