Herons are special birds that like to hunt for food in shallow water, like the edges of ponds or lakes. When a heron wants to catch something to eat—like a frog, fish, or bug—it first stands very still. It doesn’t move much so it doesn’t scare away its dinner.
While standing still, the heron watches carefully to find its prey. When it spots something, it moves closer very slowly and quietly. Then, when it’s just close enough, the heron quickly uses its long, sharp beak to grab its food in one fast move. This way of hunting helps herons catch their meals without scaring them away!
