Puffins are amazing sea birds that need a safe place to lay their eggs and raise their babies. To do this, they make nests in special spots called burrows. A burrow is like a little hole or tunnel in the ground.

Here’s how puffins make their nests:

  • Digging Their Own Burrows: Puffins use their beaks and feet to dig shallow tunnels in soft dirt or grassy areas. These burrows are safe and cozy places for their eggs.
  • Using Empty Nests: Sometimes, puffins don’t dig their own homes. Instead, they find nests that other animals, like giant petrels or rabbits, made but don’t use anymore. Puffins can use these empty nests to keep their eggs safe too.

This way, puffins have a nice, safe place to raise their chicks until they are ready to go out into the world!
