What is a Pope?

The pope is the leader of the Catholic Church, which has millions of people all over the world. He lives in a tiny country called Vatican City, located inside Rome, Italy.

What Happens When a Pope Dies or Steps Down?

When the current pope dies or decides to stop being pope, the Catholic Church must choose a new leader. This special event is very important for Catholics everywhere.

How is the New Pope Chosen?

  1. Gathering the Cardinals: Cardinals are important church leaders who help the pope. When there is no pope, all the cardinals come together in Vatican City for a meeting called a conclave.
  2. Secrecy: The cardinals meet in the Sistine Chapel, and the doors are locked so no one can leave or come in until they choose the new pope.
  3. Voting: The cardinals vote by secret ballot. They write the name of the person they think should be the new pope on a piece of paper.
  4. Counting Votes: To become the new pope, a person must get at least two-thirds of the votes. If no one gets enough votes, they vote again.
  5. Signals to the World: When a new pope is chosen, the cardinals burn the papers from voting. If there's no new pope yet, the smoke from the chimney is black. When the new pope is finally chosen, the smoke is white! Everyone watches to see the smoke and find out the news.
  6. The Announcement: The new pope appears on a balcony and says a blessing to welcome everyone.

Why is this Process Important?

This careful way of choosing a new pope helps make sure the right leader is picked to guide the Catholic Church.
