Hi there! Let's talk about baby hippos and how they are born. Baby hippos are called calves. Even though hippos love water and spend a lot of time in rivers or lakes, baby hippos are not actually born underwater. They are born on land or sometimes very close to the water, but not deep underwater.

Hippos can hold their breath for a long time and love swimming, but when the baby hippo is born, the mother makes sure the calf gets fresh air right away. Sometimes, the mother helps the baby into the water after it's born, so the calf can start swimming and learning about life in the water.

So, baby hippos are born near water, but not under it. They need to breathe air just like you and me!
