In springtime, male wood grouses want to find a mate, which means a female bird to start a family with. They have a special way to get the females to notice them!
First, the male wood grouse spreads out or "fans" his tail feathers, making a big, beautiful display that looks like a fancy skirt.
Next, he makes very loud noises, kind of like a musical call, that can be heard far away. These sounds help the females know he is nearby and could be a good partner.
All of this is like the male saying, "Look at me! I'm strong and healthy!" to the females. The females watch the tail feathers and listen to the sounds to decide which male they like best.
This fun show happens every spring and is very important for the wood grouses to find a partner and have baby birds.
