Hi there! Have you ever noticed that the brain looks like it has lots of waves and folds, kind of like a maze? That’s because the brain’s surface isn’t smooth—it’s wrinkly! But why is that?

Well, the brain needs a lot of space to fit many, many brain cells, which help you think, learn, and have fun! If the brain was smooth, it wouldn't have enough room for all these cells inside your skull.

So, the brain folds itself into lots of little hills and valleys called gyri (the hills) and sulci (the valleys). This way, it fits a big surface area in a small space—just like folding a big piece of paper to fit in a small box!

These wrinkly parts help your brain work better because they let more brain cells fit inside your head so you can do all the amazing things you do every day.
