What Are Brood Parasites?

Imagine if you could trick someone into taking care of your toys for you! Some birds do something similar with their babies. These birds are called brood parasites.

How Do Brood Parasites Work?

Usually, birds build nests and take care of their own eggs and baby chicks. But brood parasites don’t build nests or raise their own babies. Instead, they lay their eggs in someone else’s nest!

The other bird, which thinks the eggs belong to it, then takes care of all the babies, even the ones not its own. The brood parasite's egg hatches, and its chick often grows faster and bigger than the others.

Why Do They Do This?

It's a sneaky way for brood parasites to save energy because they don't have to build nests or feed the babies themselves. But it can be hard for the birds that get tricked because they have to work extra hard!

Examples of Brood Parasites

  • Cuckoos: Famous brood parasites that lay eggs in other birds' nests.
  • Brown-headed Cowbirds: Birds in North America that are also brood parasites.

Fun Fact!

Some baby brood parasites are so clever that when they hatch, they push the other eggs or babies out of the nest, so they get all the care!

So, brood parasites are special birds that trick other birds to help raise their babies!
